The Seminary Chorus presented its annual Christmas concert under the theme “Come, Redeemer of the Earth” on Sunday, December 9, in the auditorium. Over 1,500 people heard the good news of our Savior’s birth proclaimed in song during performances at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m.
President Paul Wendland introduced the concert with a message based on John 1:10-14. The 67 man chorus, under the direction of Professor James Tiefel, sang a wide variety of traditional and contemporary hymns and carols. Included in the program was an extended composition by the 16th century Lutheran composer Heinrich Schütz. The arrangement was commissioned by the chorus and prepared by Dr. William Braun of Wisconsin Lutheran College. The choir also presented a medley of three of Paul Gerhardt’s Christmas hymns, noting that 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of Gerhardt’s birth.
Musicians from local congregations accompanied the chorus with string and brass instruments. Lori Guse, a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in nearby Thiensville, plays both violin and viola and was one of the participants. “It’s always such an uplifting experience to accompany the Seminary Chorus. I think it is a taste of what we have in store for us praising God in heaven. I feel very blessed to be asked to play alongside such an accomplished choir. Knowing that these men will be our future pastors makes it even more special.”
Tiefel has led the chorus since 1985 and teaches courses in preaching and worship besides overseeing public worship on the seminary campus. Guests brought offerings of more than $5,000, and these gifts will help support the chorus as it presents concerts in congregations in Utah, California, and Nevada over the 2008 Easter vacation.
