Teaching in Ukraine

Professor Forrest Bivens spent the Easter break teaching at the Ukrainian Lutheran Theological Seminary of St. Sophia (Holy Wisdom) in Ternopil. Founded in 1995, St. Sophia offers confessional theological education for the training of pastors and other office-holders in the Ukrainian Lutheran Church.

Bivens taught two sections of systematic theology courses to the seminary’s three full-time students. Courses were taught in English and translated into Ukrainian by a classroom translator. Notes for the course were translated into Ukrainian by Pastor Andriy Honcharuk who has frequently attended Summer Quarter at WLS.

Seminary Rector John Vogt says, “We especially want to publicly thank Professor Bivens who gave his Easter break to teach here. We at St. Sophia and all in the Ukrainian Lutheran Church greatly appreciate the cooperation of WLS in loaning us guest professors.”

As WLS continues to expand its global vision, partnerships with seminaries in our fellowship such as St. Sophia are being built and nurtured. Professors Wendland and Brug taught there during portions of the last school year. Bivens will return in June to teach a one-week Summer Quarter course. And Professors Cherney and Brenner are scheduled to teach for a portion of the 2008-2009 school year.
