Pigeon Creek watershed project continues

Work continues on the Pigeon Creek watershed on the former site of the seminary lagoon. Over the last several months the dam was demolished and a channel was dredged. We now have a 20’ stream bed in place of the old lagoon.

Originally made of timber and stone, the dam was built in 1929 during construction of the seminary buildings. It was rebuilt of concrete in 1951, and had since suffered the deterioration that comes with age. Faced with the choice to rebuild the dam at a potential cost of $100,000, or to allow removal of the dam at the expense of the DNR, the seminary chose to allow the restoration of the Pigeon Creek watershed and wetlands.

Wetland plants will be imported in the months to come as the DNR enters the final stages of recreating the spawning habitat that will benefit a variety of species of fish, birds, and other wildlife.
