Traveling professors

We welcome Prof. John Brug back to campus after teaching in Hong Kong during the fall semester. Brug taught at Asia Lutheran Seminary and the South Asian Lutheran Evangelical Mission as part of a visiting professor program supported by WELS.

Rev. Dan Koelpin, administrator of WELS Board for World Missions (BWM) values the program as vital to the mission work of WELS. “The Board for World Missions appreciates the assistance of the seminary in the complicated task of teaching the whole counsel of God to future national pastors of other cultures around the world.” WELS BWM funds the compensation of a full-time seminary professor to support such important work. It does not “assume that WLS could spare professors to teach at seminaries in far flung places.”

During Winterim and the spring semester three professors will teach at sister seminaries in Sweden, Nigeria, Ukraine, and India. Professors Zell, Cherney, and Brug will teach courses on Ephesians, Isaiah, preaching the Old Testament, and teaching adults. Exchanges such as these are enriching not only for the national students they teach, but also for the professors who return with a better perspective on the worldwide mission of our synod.

“If we can impact the world with the deposit of truth with which God has blessed us as a synod, then we must find ever better ways to teach trustworthy men in other countries so that they in turn may teach others.”
