Description:
We will examine Pietism as an historic movement in Lutheranism and as a spirit that continues to this day. Students will learn that there are several different varieties of Pietism and will be made aware of some of the positive contributions of the movement. We will consider the conditions that give rise to Pietism and the challenges that Pietism poses to confessional Lutheranism. Students will have the opportunity to examine some of the literary works of Pietism and also the writings of some who opposed the movement. Participants will read and discuss in class Spener’s Pia Desideria, the literary work that gave rise to Lutheran Pietism.

We will be reading and discussing the book listed below. It is suggested that you read the book in advance. WLS Library has a couple of copies, otherwise you can get it on Amazon.
