The Western Rite: Its History and Use in Our Churches

Instructor: James Tiefel

Description:
The course will detail the formation and focus of the Roman liturgy as it grew out of the earlier rites born in Constantinople and Alexandria, especially noting its “soberness and sense” as compared to the liturgies of the East. The instructor will take course participants into the reforms of Luther as well as the renovated order that grew out of the Council of Trent. The course will observe the Lutheran deviation from the Roman order and the resultant strengths and weaknesses of the Lutheran rite as it matured in the age of Lutheran orthodoxy. The course will assess the value of this liturgical pattern as it works to survive in contemporary Catholicism and in non-liturgical Christianity.
